TO CONGRATULATE LOIS CROUCH MATHENY ADDY OF SALUDA COUNTY UPON REACHING HER 100TH BIRTHDAY.
Whereas, Lois Crouch Matheny Addy was the ninth of eleven children of Ida Willis and West Smith Crouch on October 24, 1892, in Old Edgefield County, four years before Saluda County was formed; and
Whereas, Mrs. Addy graduated from Winthrop College in 1914 and was the oldest person at her seventy-fifth class reunion with four generations of her family present; and
Whereas, Mrs. Addy presides over the local Woman's Christian Temperance Union which her mother founded for Saluda in 1905; and
Whereas, the Loyal Temperance Union (ages six through twelve) and the Youth Temperance Council (ages twelve through twenty-one) were founded by Mrs. Addy to express the danger of alcoholic beverages and harmful drugs and to point the advantage of a life lived in abstinence; and
Whereas, Mrs. Addy has touched many lives over the years with her art work, which she continues today, as a teacher and principal, with flower arranging, bird programs to the schools and organizations, and as a horticulturist with the Yellow Jessamine Garden Club; and
Whereas, St. Paul United Methodist Church depends on Mrs. Addy to continue her work as an active member for eighty-nine years, a Sunday School teacher for thirty-nine years, and as a volunteer helper at the Saluda Nursing Center; and
Whereas, Mrs. Addy was married first to James Marvin Matheny who died in the flu epidemic in 1919 and then to Samuel Roland Elwell Addy who died in 1963; and
Whereas, Mrs. Addy had four children, eight grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren; and
Whereas, Mrs. Addy continues to live her life to the fullest and celebrated her 100th birthday on October 24, 1992. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly congratulate Mrs. Lois Crouch Matheny Addy on reaching her 100th birthday.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Addy.
