TO CONGRATULATE COACH GERALD GRIFFIN OF FRANCIS MARION UNIVERSITY UPON HIS INDUCTION INTO THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS (NAIA) HALL OF FAME.
Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are very pleased to learn that Coach Gerald Griffin has been inducted as a baseball coach into the NAIA on January 8, 1993; and
Whereas, Coach Griffin has brought recognition to Francis Marion University upon his election to the NAIA Hall of Fame and is the University's first staff member to be elected to a national Hall of Fame; and
Whereas, Coach Griffin's outstanding coaching abilities have qualified his team for NAIA District Six playoffs sixteen times with his teams capturing the District Six Title in l974, l976, and l988, and with nine of his players having signed professional baseball contracts; and
Whereas, Coach Griffin has earned NAIA District Six baseball "Coach of the Year" honors four times and in l979 and l988 was the South Carolina baseball "Coach of the Year", with a career coaching mark of 562-358-1 spanning twenty-six seasons; and
Whereas, Gerald Griffin has served on numerous NAIA District Six committees, including seven years as chairman of the District Six Baseball Committee, five years as chairman of the NAIA Area Seven Baseball Committee, six years as Chairman of the district's Athletic Directors Committee, and two years as vice-chairman of the district; and
Whereas, Gerald Griffin earned B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and lettered four years in baseball and twice earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference and North Carolina All-State honors as an outfielder. He played baseball four years in the Philadelphia Phillies Professional Baseball Club and served as a player-manager with the Spartanburg Phillies; and
Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, would like to publicly recognize Coach Gerald Griffin upon his commitment and dedication to molding the athletic abilities of his young players. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives hereby congratulate Coach Gerald Griffin for his outstanding career coaching abilities and most notably his role as Francis Marion University's athletic director nourishing the growth of the athletic program from seven sports to twelve.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Coach Gerald Griffin and to Dr. Thomas C. Stanton, President of Francis Marion University.
