A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

EXPRESSING THE SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY AT THE DEATH OF DR. ZOLTAN L. AGARDY OF GREENWOOD COUNTY AND EXTENDING SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, Dr. Zoltan Laszlo Agardy of Greenwood County died on March 6, 1993, at the age of seventy-seven; and

Whereas, Dr. Agardy was born in Hungary and was a 1941 graduate of the medical school in Debrecen, Hungary, becoming board-certified for surgery in 1944; and

Whereas, he studied medicine in Helsinki, Finland, and Vienna, Austria, served in the Hungarian Army from 1944-46, and immigrated to the United States in 1949; and

Whereas, upon arriving in this country and discovering that his medical and surgical diplomas were not recognized, he worked diligently to overcome this obstacle to his career and eventually completed three years of formal training in psychiatry; and

Whereas, in 1962, he became board-certified in psychiatry in South Carolina, and, in 1964, went to Greenwood as a director of the Beckman Mental Health Center; and

Whereas, in 1978, he resigned as director at Beckman and became the chief of psychiatric services, and he retired from the South Carolina Department of Mental Health in 1984 and maintained a private practice; and

Whereas, in 1974-75, he was president of the American Psychiatric Association, South Carolina District Branch; in 1979, he received his first "Distinguished Award" for services to the mentally ill and leadership of SCAPA; and he was a member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club and of First Presbyterian Church of Greenwood; and

Whereas, he was widely recognized and very highly regarded in his profession and made a lasting impact on improvements in the treatment of the mentally ill in the State of South Carolina; and

Whereas, he was a truly outstanding individual whose contributions to Greenwood and the State of South Carolina will long be remembered and greatly valued. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express sorrow at the death of Dr. Zoltan L. Agardy of Greenwood County and extend sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Agardy's family.
