A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

RECOGNIZING THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE LATE HUBERT D. OSTEEN, SR., OF SUMTER COUNTY UPON HIS INDUCTION INTO THE SOUTH CAROLINA PRESS ASSOCIATION'S HALL OF FAME.

Whereas, the late Hubert Duvall Osteen, Sr., of Sumter County was editor and publisher of The Item newspaper of Sumter for forty years; and

Whereas, he was inducted into the South Carolina Press Association's hall of Fame at the association's 1993 Winter Meeting in February in Columbia; and

Whereas, a nominee for induction into the Hall of Fame must have made his or her journalistic reputation in South Carolina, or, if the reputation reflects achievements outside the State, the nominee must have been a native of the State; also, nominees must have been deceased for at least four years; and

Whereas, Mr. Osteen is the third member of his family to be so inducted, succeeding his father and his grandfather in receiving the honor; and

Whereas, Mr. Osteen was an outstanding journalist, editor, publisher, and chief executive officer and was well-known, highly regarded, and much admired throughout the Palmetto State and nationally; and

Whereas, he was the second editor and publisher in the history of The Item; he retired December 1, 1986, as president of Osteen Publishing Company and served as chairman of the company until his death on April 14, 1987, at the age of eighty-three. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognizes the achievements of the late Hubert D. Osteen, Sr., of Sumter County upon his induction into the South Carolina Press Association's Hall of Fame.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Osteen's family.
