A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

RECOGNIZING THE GENEROSITY OF THE LATE JAMES L. MASON OF AUGUSTA, GEORGIA, WHO DEVISED AN ALMOST TWO THOUSAND-ACRE TRACT OF LAND IN MCCORMICK COUNTY TO THE STATE WILDLIFE AND MARINE RESOURCES DEPARTMENT FOR PUBLIC HUNTING AND OTHER TYPES OF OUTDOOR RECREATION.

Whereas, the late James L. Mason of Augusta, Georgia, devised an almost two thousand-acre tract of land in McCormick County to the State Wildlife and Marine Resources Department for public hunting and other types of outdoor recreation; and

Whereas, the property was acquired in 1991 from Mr. Mason, who died in October, 1990, and left the property to the department; and

Whereas, under the terms of Mr. Mason's will, the tract will be held in perpetuity as a "wildlife reservation" for hunting and recreational purposes; and

Whereas, the property, located in lower McCormick County with frontage on the Savannah River and S.C. 28, has been appraised at more than four million dollars; and

Whereas, according to the terms of Mr. Mason's will, all of the tract is open to public hunting, except for six hundred twenty acres under a previously-existing long-term lease; and

Whereas, currently a multiple-use management plan is being developed for the tract by the state wildlife department and the South Carolina Forestry Commission jointly; and

Whereas, the citizens of South Carolina are truly fortunate to have received this property, and the generosity of James L. Mason is most highly deserving of recognition. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognizes the generosity of the late James L. Mason of Augusta, Georgia, who devised an almost two thousand-acre tract of land in McCormick County to the State Wildlife and Marine Resources Department for public hunting and other types of outdoor recreation.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of the late James L. Mason, to Mr. Maurice Steinberg, 2917 Professional Parkway, Suite A, Augusta, Georgia 30907; and to Mr. Frank M. Green, 548 Hillwood Circle, Augusta, Georgia.
