EXPRESSING THE APPRECIATION OF THE MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TO DR. OLIN B. SANSBURY, JR., CHANCELLOR OF THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA AT SPARTANBURG, ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT AS CHANCELLOR.
Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives note that Dr. Olin B. Sansbury, Jr., Chancellor of the University of South Carolina at Spartanburg, will be retiring from his post as chancellor after twenty years of distinguished service at the University of South Carolina at Spartanburg; and
Whereas, Dr. Sansbury, who earned his undergraduate degree at Wofford College in 1959 and his Ph. D. in international studies from the University of South Carolina at Columbia in 1972, began an academic career after service in Viet Nam with the United State Army and a brief career both as a television and newspaper journalist in Florence when he in 1966 joined the faculty of the University of South Carolina at Florence on a part-time basis; and
Whereas, in 1967 he began a full-time faculty member at that institution, teaching international studies and political science and in 1970 when the institution became Francis Marion College, he served as Dean of Students; and
Whereas, in 1971 he moved to the USC Columbia campus as Assistant Vice Provost for Student Affairs for the regional campus system; and
Whereas, he went to USC Spartanburg as its chief executive officer in 1973 when the campus had seven hundred fifty students and offered only associate degrees and during his tenure, enrollment has been expanded to approximately four thousand five hundred students and the institution offers undergraduate degrees in thirty fields of study and graduate programs; and
Whereas, in addition to his distinguished service in academia he has been active in community affairs as vice president for economic development and for community development of the Spartanburg Area Chamber of Commerce, serving as chairman of the Board of Regents for Leadership Spartanburg, as 1991 chairman of the education division of the United Way of the Piedmont, as a member of the board of the South Carolina Council for Economic Education, and as a member of the South Carolina Humanities Council; and
Whereas, his activities extend to national educational organizations as a member of the Board of Directors for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the American Council on Education Commission on Governmental Relations, and the NCAA Presidents Commission; and
Whereas, it is appropriate for members of the House of Representatives to pause in their deliberations so that they might honor so distinguished a contributor to the cause of higher education in South Carolina. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives express their appreciation to Dr. Olin B. Sansbury, Jr., Chancellor of the University of South Carolina at Spartanburg, on the occasion of his retirement as chancellor.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Olin B. Sansbury, Jr.
