A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING THE ANDERSON INDEPENDENT-MAIL ON WINNING THE CHARLES E. SCRIPPS AWARD FOR SERVICE IN SUPPORT OF LITERACY.

Whereas, the Anderson Independent-Mail has won the Charles E. Scripps Award, a national newspaper industry award for service in support of literacy; and

Whereas, this award is one of several national newspaper awards given by the Scripps Howard Foundation of Cincinnati; and

Whereas, the Independent-Mail of Anderson won the award for its various programs in support of literacy, including an annual Halloween Literacy Carnival, which the newspaper co-sponsors, and a Reader Roundup program that provides free books for each Anderson County public school fifth grader, which is coordinated by the newspaper and the Literacy Association of Anderson County; and

Whereas, the efforts of the Independent-Mail in behalf of literacy are highly commendable and truly worthwhile, and the newspaper's selection for the Charles E. Scripps Award is greatly deserved. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulates the Anderson Independent-Mail on winning the Charles E. Scripps Award for service in support of literacy.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Anderson Independent-Mail, in care of Mr. Fred L. Foster, president and publisher.
