A BILL

TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 59-29-221 SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION SHALL ESTABLISH AN "EXPERT IN RESIDENCE" PROGRAM IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN WHICH EXPERTS IN PARTICULAR DISCIPLINES ARE ENGAGED ON A SHORT-TERM BASIS TO INSTRUCT STUDENTS IN THESE DISCIPLINES.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION 1. The 1976 Code is amended by adding:

"Section 59-29-221. The State Department of Education shall establish an `Expert in Residence' program in the public schools beginning with school year 1993-94 in which experts in particular disciplines are engaged on a short-term basis to instruct students in these disciplines. The `Expert in Residence' program may first be pilot-tested in selected school districts during school year 1993-94 if the department considers this necessary. Teacher training and curriculum development must be established in the same manner other similar programs including the `Arts in Residence' program have been established."

SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
