COMMENDING AND THANKING LINDA JACOBUS FOR HER EXCELLENT WORK AS STAFF TO THE SOUTH CAROLINA COMMITTEE ON HIGH SCHOOL APPRENTICESHIPS AND MENTORSHIPS AND AS CHAIR OF THE COMMITTEE'S SUBCOMMITTEE ON SCHOOL CURRICULUM.
Whereas, Linda Jacobus is the Business/Industry and Continuing Education Coordinator at Lexington Applied Technology Center, Lexington School District One; and
Whereas, her activities there include: placement of seniors after graduation; coordinator for the cooperative education program; business school partnerships; liaison to industry for the Technology Center; Target 2000 dropout prevention grant coordinator; project director for two Carl Perkins grants; and adult education/community education director; and
Whereas, she received her B.S. degree from Eastern Kentucky University and her master's degree from the University of Louisville; she was a high school classroom teacher in Louisville, Kentucky before coming to the Midlands of South Carolina about ten years ago; and
Whereas, Concurrent Resolution H.4520 of 1992 created a committee to study issues relating to middle, junior high, and high school students in South Carolina "who likely will not attend college or will drop out of school", including as areas of study such critical issues as early career counseling of these students, the tech-prep program, mentorship programs, post-secondary options programs, and the experience-based career education and cooperative programs; and
Whereas, the committee was charged with investigating what was then being provided to South Carolina students who are not college-bound and with comparing that to what was being provided to students in leading developed countries and other American states against which South Carolina businesses and industries compete for economic development; and
Whereas, it was Linda Jacobus who brought her wealth of background, talent, experience, and gifts to carrying out the work of the committee -- the South Carolina Committee on High School Apprenticeships and Mentorships; and
Whereas, she served as chair of the committee's Subcommittee on School Curriculum; and
Whereas, as a result of her dedication and hard work, the committee was able to produce the acclaimed "Final Report of the Committee on High School Apprenticeships and Mentorships: Establishing a School-To-Work System" in an effort to provide some definite answers to some very difficult problems; and
Whereas, the people of the State of South Carolina are forever indebted to Linda Jacobus for her time and efforts in this regard, and the members of the General Assembly feel that she is highly deserving of recognition. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commends and thanks Linda Jacobus for her excellent work as staff to the South Carolina Committee on High School Apprenticeships and Mentorships and as chair of the committee's Subcommittee on School Curriculum.
