A SENATE RESOLUTION

EXPRESSING THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SENATE TO L. BANKS WANNAMAKER, SR., OF ST. MATTHEWS IN CALHOUN COUNTY, ON THE OCCASION OF HIS ONE HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY.

Whereas, the members of the Senate note with delight and satisfaction that March 3, 1993, marks the one hundredth birthday of Mr. L. Banks Wannamaker, Sr., of St. Matthews in Calhoun County; and

Whereas, Mr. Wannamaker is a lifelong resident of Calhoun County, having attended the public schools in St. Matthews and gone on to further education at Wofford College and the University of South Carolina; and

Whereas, he has for sixty-two years served as a deacon and elder in the St. Matthews Presbyterian Church; and

Whereas, prior to World War I, he served as an enlisted man in the United States Army during the Mexican Border Conflict with Poncho Villa and also served as a naval ensign during World War I in charge of the naval unit at Clemson College; and

Whereas, during World War II he served his country once again by undertaking the difficult and thankless task of administering gasoline and food rationing in Calhoun County; and

Whereas, he has been an active seedsman and farmer for sixty years, having built and operated two cotton gins and founded the L. B. Wannamaker Seed Company in 1935; and

Whereas, his colleagues have honored him and recognized his ability by naming him President of the South Carolina Seedsmen Association in 1963 and Honorary Seedsman in 1971; and

Whereas, in service to his state he served on the South Carolina Highway Commission beginning in 1944 and has been a loyal backer of the University of South Carolina for eighty years as an original member of the Gamecock Club and Century Club; and

Whereas, in his long life he has enjoyed especially golf and thoroughbred horseracing, having taken up racing after his retirement in 1970 and purchasing horses which have raced successfully on many occasions; and

Whereas, he married Mary Jordan Henderson of Monticello, Georgia, and has one son, Luther Banks Wannamaker, Jr., three grandchildren, and four great grandchildren; and

Whereas, it is appropriate for the members of the Senate to pause in their deliberations so they might note this milestone in the life of so distinguished a son of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate express congratulations to L. Banks Wannamaker, Sr., on the occasion of his one hundredth birthday.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. L. Banks Wannamaker, Sr..
