TO RECOGNIZE THE 1993-94 CAROLINA CONCERTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA COLISEUM AND TO NOTE THE OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE APRIL 19, 1994, BY PETER NERO ACCOMPANIED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA DIRECTED BY DR. DONALD PORTNOY.
Whereas, the University of South Carolina Symphony Orchestra concluded its current public season April 19, 1994, with "An Evening With Peter Nero" accompanied by the University of South Carolina Symphony Orchestra; and
Whereas, this performance concluded the sixty-fifth season for the orchestra. The University of South Carolina Symphony has evolved into a major cultural and educational force in South Carolina; and
Whereas, Dr. Donald Portnoy is the Conductor of the University of South Carolina Symphony and the Chamber Orchestra. Dr. Portnoy has been on the School of Music faculty since 1986; and
Whereas, as well as Peter Nero, the list of stars with whom Dr. Portnoy and the Symphony have worked include Shirley Jones, Tony Bennett, The Lettermen, Judy Collins, Marvin Hamlisch, and the Manhattan Rythmn Kings; and
Whereas, as Music Director and Conductor, Peter Nero will return to Philadelphia and the "Philly Pops" for over twenty concerts marking his fifteen consecutive season there. He is also Pops Music Director and Advisor for the Tulsa Philharmonic; and
Whereas, Peter Nero has received many honors throughout his career, but two of the most cherished are the Honorary Doctorate from his alma mater, Brooklyn College, and the International Society of Performing Arts Presenters Award for Excellence in the Arts. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly recognize the 1993-94 Carolina Concerts at the University of South Carolina Coliseum and note the outstanding performance April 19, 1994, by Peter Nero accompanied by the University of South Carolina Symphony Orchestra directed by Dr. Donald Portnoy.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Portnoy.
