CONGRATULATING COASTAL CAROLINA UNIVERSITY ON ITS FORTIETH ANNIVERSARY AS AN INSTITUTION OF HIGHER LEARNING, AND COMMENDING THE UNIVERSITY ON ITS PHENOMENAL SUCCESS AND FOR ITS OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS IN HIGHER EDUCATION.
Whereas, on the evening of July 23, 1954, a group of citizens met at Horry County Memorial Library to discuss the creation of a local college, and, at a follow-up meeting on August 6 of that year, the group voted to become a nonprofit organization called the Coastal Educational Foundation, Inc., and elected Dr. R. Cathcart Smith as president; and
Whereas, Coastal Carolina Junior College opened on September 20, 1954, as a branch of the College of Charleston, and became independent in 1958, when the College of Charleston discontinued its extension program; and
Whereas, on April 9, 1959, a contract was signed with the University of South Carolina that established the Coastal Carolina Regional Campus of the University of South Carolina, effective Fall of 1960; and
Whereas, in 1973, the college added a junior year, and, in 1974, a fourth year was added; in 1975, USC Coastal awarded its first four-year degree; and
Whereas, during the its 1993 session, the General Assembly passed legislation establishing Coastal Carolina University as an independent, state-supported institution, effective July 1, 1993; the first board of trustees was elected by the General Assembly in June, 1993, and when the board met for the first time on July 1, 1993, Dr. Ronald R. Ingle was named the institution's first president; and
Whereas, the Coastal Carolina University Board of Trustees includes the following outstanding men and women: Mr. James J. Johnson of Conway, chairman; Mrs. Cathy Brand Harvin of Summerton, vice chairman; Mr. H. Franklin Burroughs of Conway, secretary; Mr. Edward Craig Wall, Jr., of Conway; Mr. Gene Anderson of Myrtle Beach; Mr. Payne H. Barnette, Jr., of Greenwood; Mr. Robert D. Brown of Camden; Mr. Fred Fairey DuBard, Jr., of Florence; Mr. Dean P. Hudson of Conway; Dr. James F. Kane of Columbia; Mr. William L. Lyles, Jr., of Anderson; Mrs. Elaine W. Marks of Spartanburg; Mr. Clark B. Parker of Myrtle Beach; Mrs. Juli Streater Powers of Clio; Dr. R. Cathcart Smith of Murrells Inlet; Mr. Keith S. Smith of Greer; and Mr. Oran P. Smith of Columbia; and
Whereas, from those humble, tentative beginnings four decades ago at the Horry County Memorial Library on a humid South Carolina summer evening, an outstanding institution of higher learning has evolved and now flourishes; and
Whereas, the citizens of Horry County, the Pee Dee, and the State of South Carolina can take great pride in the amazing accomplishments, growth, and success of this excellent University; and
Whereas, the General Assembly is delighted to recognize Coastal Carolina University on the occasion of its fortieth anniversary. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulates Coastal Carolina University on its fortieth anniversary as an institution of higher learning and commends the University on its phenomenal success and for its outstanding achievements in higher education.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Ronald R. Ingle, president, and to the board of trustees in care of its chairman, Mr. James J. Johnson.
