A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

EXPRESSING THE APPRECIATION OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY FOR THE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE TO COMMUNITY AND STATE OF MR. LEVIS L. GILSTRAP, JR., OF GREENVILLE COUNTY.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are pleased to recognize the distinguished service to State and community of Mr. Levis L. Gilstrap, Jr., of Greenville County; and

Whereas, Mr. Gilstrap, a native of Easley who attended Pickens County Schools followed by service in the United States Army, began his career as a meat cutter in Greenville and later opened his own grocery store; and

Whereas, in addition to his grocery business, he began selling real estate and insurance and has over the years developed several subdivisions in Mauldin and the surrounding area, building over fifteen hundred homes in and around the community in the last twenty years; and

Whereas, Mr. Gilstrap has served faithfully as a member of the Greenville Board of Realtors for thirty-one years, chairing many committees and serving as director; and

Whereas, for twenty-eight years he has been a member of the Greenville Homebuilders Association, serving as president of the Greenville Association in 1971 and president in 1974 of the South Carolina Association of Homebuilders and was named Builder of the Year for 1969 and honored for bringing approximately two hundred new members into the association; and

Whereas, Mr. Gilstrap has been a member of the Civitan Club with thirty-one years' perfect attendance, donating at least eight hours each week to work for the handicapped, the retarded, and for the Special Olympics, and has during that term of service served as president of the Civitan Club and held other offices such as lieutenant governor of the district and sergeant-at-arms for International Civitans; and

Whereas, he received The Merit Award from Civitan International and was Most Valuable Member of the South Carolina District for 1970; and

Whereas, Mr. Gilstrap has also served on the South Carolina Residential Homebuilders Commission since its beginning in 1974, twice serving as chairman; and

Whereas, in addition to his other community service, Mr. Gilstrap is chairman of the trustees of White Oak Baptist Church which he has attended for the last thirty-seven years; and

Whereas, Mr. Gilstrap and his wife, the former Alice Williams, are the parents of four children and have five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and

Whereas Mr. Gilstrap was a member of the PTA for twenty-nine years, during which time he served as president on numerous occasions, and Mr. and Mrs. Gilstrap were selected as Parents of the Year by the PTA in 1973; and

Whereas, it is appropriate for members of the General Assembly to pause in their deliberations so that they might note the distinguished service to community and State of so great a son of South Carolina. Now, therefore, Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly express their appreciation for the distinguished service to community and State of Mr. Levis L. Gilstrap, Jr., of Greenville County.
