A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE THE HONORABLE JOSIE G. GASTON FOR HER DISTINGUISHED CAREER IN PUBLIC OFFICE AND FOR HER LOYAL AND UNFLAGGING SERVICE TO THE FAIRFIELD COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD OF TRUSTEES AND HER SERVICE AS AN OFFICER, DIRECTOR, AND 1995 PRESIDENT OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SCHOOL BOARDS ASSOCIATION.

Whereas, Josie G. Gaston was the first black female to serve on the Fairfield County Board of Trustees; and

Whereas, Mrs. Gaston has frequently been called upon to assist the Board, most notably in her service on the committee to elect an assistant superintendent, and the Board of Trustees' Budget Committee; and

Whereas, Josie G. Gaston has served as the chairperson for the Curriculum and Instruction Committee, the Board of Trustees' Building and Planning Committee, and the Board of Trustees' Personnel Committee; and

Whereas, Mrs. Gaston has represented the School Board of Trustees on the Fairfield County Coordinating Council and the Midlands Child Abuse Council, and was elected to serve as the Chairman of the Student Hearing Committee; and

Whereas, Josie G. Gaston served as Vice-Chairman of the Board of Trustees and went on to become the first African-American to be elected as Chairman of the Board of Trustees and was also the first female to become Chairman of the Board of Trustees; and

Whereas, Mrs. Gaston devised a ten-year plan for a District Comprehensive High School while serving as Chairman of the Board; and

Whereas, Josie G. Gaston, as a member of the South Carolina School Boards Association has served on the Finance, Legislative, Nominating and Executive Committees; and

Whereas, Mrs. Gaston represented the South Carolina School Boards Association at both the region and national level and served as vice-chairman of the 1995 Southern Regional School Boards Association in Charleston, South Carolina; and

Whereas, Josie G. Gaston's service to her community and on the board of South Carolina School Boards Association as Secretary, Treasurer, President-elect culminating this past year in her service as President of the South Carolina School Boards Association. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly honor Josie G. Gaston for her distinguished career in public office and for her loyal and unflagging service to the Fairfield County School Board of Trustees and her service as an officer, director, and 1995 President of the South Carolina School Boards Association.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Josie G. Gaston.
