A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND EXTEND THE HEARTFELT APPRECIATION OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO MS. BIRDIE LEWIS SANDERS FOR HER DEDICATION TO THE CHILDREN OF CHARLESTON COUNTY DURING HER MANY YEARS IN THE CLASSROOM.

Whereas, Ms. Birdie Lewis Sanders' formal education was acquired in the classrooms of Hemingway High School, the University of South Carolina, The Citadel, and the College of Charleston; and

Whereas, Ms. Sanders' teaching career began in a kindergarten classroom at the First Baptist Church in Mt. Pleasant and second grade at Oakland elementary; and

Whereas, Ms. Sanders arrived at Mt. Pleasant Academy Elementary School in 1967 in a first grade classroom; and

Whereas, Ms. Sanders remained in that same classroom for twenty-eight years, filling the room with enthusiasm and the students with a desire to learn; and

Whereas, Ms. Sanders was named Charleston County Teacher of the Year in 1977 and was selected as one of five "Honor Roll Teachers" in the 1978 South Carolina Teacher of the Year program; and

Whereas, Ms. Sanders has represented Mt. Pleasant Academy as its Teacher of the Year on several occasions and its representative to numerous countywide committees and functions; and

Whereas, Ms. Sanders organized and implemented the science lab which has been named The Birdie Lewis Sanders Discovery Room in her honor; and

Whereas, Ms. Sanders, in 1977, planted an oak tree on the school grounds which will serve as a continual reminder of the steadfast dedication, loyalty and many lives touched by Birdie Lewis Sanders. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the Members of the South Carolina General Assembly recognize and extend their heartfelt appreciation to Ms. Birdie Lewis Sanders for her dedication to the children of Charleston County during her many years in the classroom.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Ms. Birdie Lewis Sanders.
