A BILL

TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 23-6-435 SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT BEFORE THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY CERTIFIES THAT A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER IS QUALIFIED, HE MUST HAVE SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED CERTAIN TRAINING.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION 1. The 1976 Code is amended by adding:

"Section 23-6-435. Notwithstanding another provision of law, before the Department of Public Safety certifies that a law enforcement officer is qualified pursuant to Section 23-6-430, he must have successfully completed three credit hours of training in each of the following subjects:

(1) the South Carolina Constitution;

(2) the structure of state government;

(3) the structure of local government;

(4) the structure of the state court system; and

(5) the history of South Carolina."

SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
