A BILL

TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 23-9-185 SO AS TO PROVIDE CERTAIN INSTANCES IN WHICH DEAD BOLT LOCKS REQUIRING A KEY FOR OPERATION ON BOTH SIDES MAY BE USED.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION 1. The 1976 Code is amended by adding:

"Section 23-9-185. Notwithstanding another provision of law including applicable building codes, dead bolt locks requiring a key for operation on both sides may be used on any exit door, where the locking device is not provided with a key that cannot be removed when the door is locked from the inside, where there is:

(1) a window within easy access to the lock; and

(2) another exit door that is not within easy access to the lock."

SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
