TO COMMEMORATE MR. WAYNE P. VAN VRANKEN AS RECIPIENT OF THE 1996 OUTSTANDING OLDER SOUTH CAROLINIAN AWARD BY THE OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR, DIVISION ON AGING.
Whereas, Mr. Wayne P. Van Vranken graduated from Schenectady High School in 1927 and graduated from Union College in Schenectady, New York with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1931; and
Whereas, Mr. Van Vranken distinguished himself during his employment with the Elliot Company, Allis Chalmers and Siemens through his research and new innovations in his field; and
Whereas, Mr. Van Vranken has served the Summerville Chapter of the AARP since the late 1970's through his position as President in 1982 and 1983 and by his involvement with local and state-wide committees; and
Whereas, Mr. Van Vranken is an active member of Summerville's Presbyterian Church by assisting the church with fund-raising efforts, serving on the Finance Committee, Long Range Planning Committee, Capital Gift's Campaign, and he continues to serve as an usher; and
Whereas, Mr. Van Vranken has been a very active member of the Dorchester Human Development Board of Directors since the mid- 1980's; and
Whereas, Mr. Van Vranken provided excellent leadership in his role of Chairman of the Board of Directors for four years and in continuous committee work he has shown the knowledge and dedication to lend support wherever it is needed and the ability to make tough decisions that are workable and fair; and
Whereas, Mr. Van Vranken currently serves on the Executive, Public Relations, Senior Center and Second Chance Committees. Through his service on the Second Chance Committee, Mr. Van Vranken established the Dorchester Human Development Board and secured funding for the first year of operation and then continued to generate funding for its operation in excess of $79,000; and
Whereas, Mr. Van Vranken is a resident of the Presbyterian Home where he assists many residents on insurance forms, taxes, and financial planning. He has served this community as President of the Residents' Council and on various committees at the Presbyterian Home; and
Whereas, Mr. Van Vranken's tireless ten-year promotion of the need for a Senior Center in Dorchester County has led to it comprising a component of the proposed special Recreation District for lower Dorchester County; and
Whereas, since joining the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program in 1987, Mr. Van Vranken has volunteered over 5,000 hours of his time, yet this figure reflects only a portion of his longtime involvement in the community of Dorchester County; and
Whereas, Mr. Van Vranken has worked as an advocate for legislation affecting seniors such as the State Bingo Tax for Senior Centers, the proposed Homestead Exemption increase and other important legislative issues. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the South Carolina Senate recognizes the outstanding service to Dorchester County by Mr. Wayne P. Van Vranken and commemorates him as recipient of the 1996 Outstanding Older South Carolinian Award.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Wayne P. Van Vranken.
