TO RECOGNIZE MR. DAVID R. MERCER, THE NATIONAL EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE YMCA OF THE UNITED STATES, FOR HIS DEDICATION AND EXEMPLARY SERVICE TO THE YMCA OVER THE LAST THIRTY-FIVE YEARS.
Whereas, Mr. David Mercer began his long career with the YMCA as an assistant program director at the Mid Valley Branch of the Los Angeles YMCA in 1958 with heavy emphasis in grade school and high school programs; and
Whereas, Mr. Mercer's ability, dedication, and innovative spirit through the years propelled him to increasing levels of responsibility becoming the Executive Director of the West Valley Branch in 1967 and ultimately Senior Vice President and Director of Branch Operations for the entire metropolitan YMCA system of Los Angeles in 1979; and
Whereas, this record of success carried him to San Francisco where he served as President of the sixth largest YMCA system in the country from 1983 to 1990 and broke all previous records in the number of clients served and the raising of capital improvement funds; and
Whereas, most fittingly, the YMCA of the United States brought Mr. Mercer's career full circle in June of 1990 by naming him National Executive Director where he has served admirably bringing service to local Y's and new program development to new levels of excellence which are admired and imitated nationwide; and
Whereas, the YMCA community in South Carolina shares the immense pride that we know David's wife, Joyce, his three children, and four grandchildren have in a devoted husband, loving father and dedicated grandfather for his lifelong public and community service, Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina recognizes the tremendous dedication and exemplary service of Mr. David R. Mercer to the YMCA over the last thirty-five years.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. David R. Mercer.
