A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING OVERBROOK CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER OF GREENVILLE ON WINNING THE "PALMETTO'S FINEST AWARD", AND COMMENDING THIS EXCELLENT FACILITY FOR ITS OUTSTANDING WORK.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly have become familiar with and recently made aware of the outstanding contributions to the educational preparedness and childcare of Overbrook Child Development Center of Greenville; and

Whereas, Overbrook Child Development Center was established in 1972 in Greenville County for the purpose of providing a nurturing environment of education, with age-appropriate readiness activities in a caring, encouraging atmosphere for pre-school children ages three, four, and five years; and

Whereas, Overbrook Child Development Center was founded on the principal of "putting children first"; with this in mind, the Center has strived to provide a wholesome learning environment for the development of pre-school children of working parents who meet certain income requirements; and

Whereas, Overbrook Child Development Center has become an outstanding institution of pre-school education and offers an effective program which incorporates traditional and alternative strategies to "do more differently" and grow with and respond to the needs of its service group; and

Whereas, children are the first priority of Overbrook Child Development Center in all respects: planning, curriculum, implementation of appropriate practices, and commitment to enrich the lives of its students, through contributions to the community and their State; and

Whereas, Overbrook Child Development Center has been in the forefront of the fight for educational excellence since its inception and has been successful in meeting the challenges provided by its service group, which now numbers approximately two hundred pupils; and

Whereas, the Center has been vigilant in its efforts to meet and exceed its goals to offer an outstanding quality of early childhood education for its service group; and

Whereas, Overbrook Child Development Center has received praise, acclamation, and commendations from educational groups in South Carolina, and its students have gone on to become outstanding achievers in elementary, secondary, and higher education institutions; and

Whereas, Overbrook Child Development Center has been recognized for its exceptional achievement of excellence by being selected as the winner of the Palmetto's Finest Award, one of the most prestigious prizes given to a school; this is an honor presented to elementary and middle schools by the State Association of Elementary and Middle School Principals; and

Whereas, the Center has been accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children since 1991; and

Whereas, the Center has received other prestigious awards such as Palmetto's Finest Congressional Winner in 1993; and

Whereas, Overbrook has been recognized by receiving "Red Ribbon Week" in recognition for outstanding elementary school program in 1993, was featured at the 1988, 1989, and 1993 conventions for the National Association for the Education of Young Children, and was featured at the 1992 and 1993 conferences for the South Carolina Association for Children Under Six; and

Whereas, Overbrook is led by its outstanding principal, Mrs. Doris Ballard, and has an excellent, caring faculty and staff; and

Whereas, Mrs. Ballard said the school's faculty and staff were thrilled to win the "Palmetto's Finest Award" after first garnering one of the competition's six regional awards given to schools in each congressional district last year; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are greatly pleased to have this opportunity to recognize such an outstanding educational facility. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulates Overbrook Child Development Center of Greenville on winning the "Palmetto's Finest Award" and commends this excellent facility for its outstanding work.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Overbrook Child Development Center in care of the school's principal, Mrs. Doris Ballard.
