A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE MR. JOSEPH WASHINGTON OF THE TOWN OF NESMITH FOR HIS MANY YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE CITIZENS OF WILLIAMSBURG COUNTY.

Whereas, Mr. Joseph Washington was instrumental in establishing the Nesmith branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People; and

Whereas, Mr. Washington, with the help of future United States Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, was able to secure the first free school bus for the children of Nesmith; and

Whereas, Mr. Washington was instrumental in establishing and leading Battery Park School's first parent-teacher's association; and

Whereas, Mr. Washington has worked diligently to register voters in his community; and

Whereas, Mr. Washington has been a leader in the effort to establish senior citizen centers throughout Williamsburg County; and

Whereas, Mr. Washington was the first scout master, Methodist Men chairman, and usher at Friendship United Methodist Church. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly congratulate Mr. Joseph Washington for his many years of public service to the citizens of Williamsburg County and the State of South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Joseph Washington.
