COMMENDING MARTHA GAMBLE HALL OF MAULDIN ON HER TENURE AS NATIONAL ALUMNI PRESIDENT OF THE JOHNSON C. SMITH UNIVERSITY GENERAL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION.
Whereas, Martha Gamble Hall of Mauldin was graduated from Johnson C. Smith University in 1964 with a B.A. degree; in 1975, she received a Masters of Education degree with a specialty in reading from the University of Maryland; and she has done further study at Furman University and Clemson University; and
Whereas, Ms. Gamble Hall for the past twenty years has been employed with the school district of Greenville County and is currently the Chapter/Language Arts Coordinator; and
Whereas, of the many activities for which she is responsible, one of which she is most proud is the PHEPSA (Parents Helping Effect Positive Student Achievement) program. This program seeks to get parents involved in their child's school work by actually having parents "walk in the shoes" of their children; and
Whereas, she is a loyal alumna of Johnson C. Smith University, reorganizing the Greenville chapter in 1978 and serving as its local president for eight years; in 1990, she received the university's Distinguished Alumnus Award, which is presented to alumni who have shown dedication to the university and who have been successfully involved in the local community; and
Whereas, she is presently the National Alumni President of the Johnson C. Smith University General Alumni Association and also serves on the university's board of trustees; elected in 1991, she served a two-year term and was reelected in 1993 for a second term; she will culminate her term in office during the university's commencement exercises in Charlotte, North Carolina on May 5-7, 1995, and her official duties will terminate on June 30, 1995; and
Whereas, even though Johnson C. Smith University was founded in 1867, Ms. Gamble Hall is the first woman in the history of the university to serve as national president of its alumni; and
Whereas, she was one of the first women to be elected a trustee at Reedy River Baptist Church in Mauldin; later she served as chairperson of the Trustee Ministry and was the first woman to serve in such a position in the Black Baptist Church in Greenville County; and
Whereas, Ms. Gamble Hall, a truly caring individual, has served her community in many capacities and is recognized, respected, admired, and loved for her service, energy, and dedication; and
Whereas, she is a remarkable individual, and the members of the General Assembly are pleased to have this opportunity to accord her the recognition she so richly deserves. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commends Martha Gamble Hall of Mauldin on her tenure as National Alumni President of the Johnson C. Smith University General Alumni Association.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Ms. Martha Gamble Hall at 120 Brookbend Road, Mauldin, South Carolina, 29662.
