A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND DR. JULIAN E. GRANT FOR HIS OVER SIXTY YEARS OF SERVICE TO NEWBERRY COUNTY AS A PRACTICING PHYSICIAN AND COMMUNITY LEADER.

Whereas, Dr. Julian E. Grant is a ninety-four-year-old Newberry County physician who has practiced medicine for over sixty years. A native of Bennettsville, he embarked on a medical career in the 1930's, one purpose of which was to improve the quality of health care services for the African-American Community; and

Whereas, he attended local public schools in Florence County and then enrolled at Claflin College in Orangeburg. Graduating in 1925, he entered Maharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee, and graduated in 1929. After completing an internship at General Hospital No. 2 in Kansas City, Missouri, he passed the South Carolina and Tennessee board examinations and began his practice; and

Whereas, he founded the Peoples Hospital in Newberry, which was the only hospital serving African-American citizens during the 1940's and 1950's. Dr. Grant had a personal commitment to health care and often rendered services at no charge to families. He was instrumental in securing first public housing for Newberry County and the largest federally-funded housing unit in Newberry County, Grant Homes, bears his name; and

Whereas, still active in retirement, Dr. Grant is a courtesy staff member at Newberry Hospital, a member of the American and South Carolina Medical Associations and serves on many other community boards and organizations; and

Whereas, the respect in which Dr. Grant is held is evidenced by his receipt in 1995 of the Matilda A. Evans Medical Pioneer Award, The Golden Book of Deeds Award, and the Newberry Citizen of the Week award; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to publicly recognize and thank this truly outstanding South Carolinian for all he has done for his patients and the citizens of Newberry County over his distinguished sixty-year career. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly hereby commend Dr. Julian E. Grant for his over sixty years of service to Newberry County as a practicing physician and community leader.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Grant.
