A BILL

TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 16-17-585 SO AS TO PROHIBIT THE DESTRUCTION OF OR DAMAGE TO CERTAIN SIGNS AND PROVIDE PENALTIES.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION 1. The 1976 Code is amended by adding:

"Section 16-17-585. It is unlawful for a person to destroy or damage a sign erected by the State, its agencies, departments, or political subdivisions, or a local governing body. A person who violates this section is guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction, must be fined not less than five hundred nor more than one thousand dollars or imprisoned not more than thirty days, or both. A person convicted pursuant to this section also shall reimburse the entity for the cost of repairing or replacing the sign."

SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
