A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

RECOGNIZING AND EXPRESSING APPRECIATION TO THE STATE'S VOLUNTEER CAROLINA HEALTHSTYLE COORDINATORS, COMMENDING THEIR EFFORTS IN PROMOTING GOOD HEALTH, EARLY DETECTION OF DISEASE, AND DISEASE PREVENTION, AND ENDORSING CAROLINA HEALTHSTYLE, SOUTH CAROLINA'S STATE EMPLOYEE HEALTH PROMOTION PROGRAM.

Whereas, the ten leading causes of death in South Carolina are heart disease, cancer, stroke, accidents, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, pneumonia, suicide, homicide, and conditions originating in the perinatal period; and

Whereas, these diseases account for more than eighty percent of all deaths in the State and are caused by self-created lifestyle risks such as obesity, poor nutrition, smoking, lack of exercise, alcohol misuse, and stress; and

Whereas, these major causes of death are closely associated with risk factors that can be prevented or alleviated by lifestyle changes such as involvement in regular exercise programs, prudent nutritional practices, smoking cessation, reduction of alcohol intake, and increased awareness and positive management of stress; and

Whereas, Carolina Healthstyle Coordinators plan and implement health, nutrition, and fitness activities and programs to promote positive lifestyle changes in these areas to prevent or limit risk behaviors in the worksite, schools, and home; and

Whereas, Carolina Healthstyle Coordinators organize health screenings at their worksites to promote early detection of diseases such as breast and prostate cancer, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol levels; and

Whereas, Carolina Healthstyle Coordinators provide health, fitness, and nutrition information and education to their coworkers; and

Whereas, Carolina Healthstyle Coordinators are volunteers who perform these activities over and above their regular work duties. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognizes and appreciates the state's volunteer Carolina healthstyle Coordinators, commends their efforts in promoting good health, early detection of disease, and disease prevention, and endorses Carolina Healthstyle, South Carolina's State Employee Health Promotion Program.

Be it further resolved that this resolution be presented to the volunteer Carolina Healthstyle Coordinators.
