HONORING UNITED STATES SENATOR STROM THURMOND FOR HIS PARTICIPATION IN THE HERITAGE DAY CELEBRATION AT REDCLIFF PLANTATION IN AIKEN COUNTY.
Whereas, the Heritage Day Celebration will be held at Redcliff Plantation in Aiken County on May 27, 1995; and
Whereas, the theme of this year's celebration is honoring World War II veterans for their dedication and sacrifices; and
Whereas, South Carolina's senior United States senator, the Honorable Strom Thurmond, will be a participant in the celebration where he will be parade marshal and will be accorded special recognition for his service to this great country in World War II; and
Whereas, Senator Thurmond volunteered for military service on the day war was declared against Germany in the Second World War, and was assigned to HQ First Army from 1942-46; he served in the European and Pacific Theaters; he participated in the Normandy Invasion with the 82nd Airborne Division; he was awarded five battle stars; he received eighteen decorations, medals, and awards, including the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star Medal with "V", the Purple Heart, the French Croix de Guerre, and the Belgian Order of the Crown; and
Whereas, he is a Major General in the United States Army Reserves; he is past National President of the Reserve Officers Association and is the first past president to receive the "Minuteman of the Year Award" (1971); and
Whereas, the citizens of Aiken County are delighted that Senator Thurmond, with such an outstanding war record, will be participating in this year's Heritage Day Celebration. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honors United States Senator Strom Thurmond for his participation in the Heritage Day Celebration at Redcliff Plantation in Aiken County.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Senator Thurmond and to Beech Island Historical Society.
