A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND RICHLAND COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT TWO FOR ITS MAGNIFICENT ARTS EDUCATION PROGRAM AND FOR ITS RECEIPT OF A 1995 ELIZABETH O'NEILL VERNER AWARD FOR ITS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE ARTS IN SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are very pleased to learn that Richland County School District Two received a 1995 Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Award for its magnificent arts education program; and

Whereas, Richland School District Two strives to achieve artistic literacy for all its students. The district has taken a proactive role in developing a sequential discipline-based arts education program for all its students, while integrating the arts into the core curriculum. The school system includes fifteen schools; one early childhood development center, nine elementary schools, three middle schools, and two comprehensive high schools; and

Whereas, Richland Two's curriculum in music, drama, dance, and visual arts provides both a focus and an intense course of study designed to develop technical and conceptual skills. Fifty-two arts specialists serve the district, with six having received Teacher of the Year honors over the past twenty years and two are former Verner award recipients; and

Whereas, the district emphasizes that studying the arts not only helps other subjects but also is one of the best ways to understand human culture. Many of Richland Two's programs integrate arts education with other content areas; and

Whereas, through dedicated board of trustees and community arts support, the district has recently pledged funding to build an eight hundred fifty seat district visual and performing arts center and to renovate Spring Valley High School's Little Theatre; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to publicly recognize and congratulate this innovative and vibrant school district and each of its staff, teachers, and students upon its receipt of this truly deserved award. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly hereby commend Richland County School District Two for its magnificent arts education program and for its receipt of a 1995 Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Award for its contributions to the arts in South Carolina.
