A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

EXTENDING THE CONGRATULATIONS AND BEST WISHES OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO DR. ALLEN D. EDWARDS OF ROCK HILL UPON BEING NAMED THE "1995 OUTSTANDING OLDER SOUTH CAROLINIAN".

Whereas, Dr. Allen D. Edwards of Rock Hill, eighty-nine years young, has been selected by the Governor's Office, Division on Aging, as the "1995 Outstanding Older South Carolinian"; and

Whereas, he and his wife reside at Westminster Towers, a retirement community in Rock Hill; and

Whereas, he holds a Master's Degree in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin and Ph.D. from Duke University; and

Whereas, this award is presented to Dr. Edwards, who through his leadership has rendered outstanding and ongoing contributions to aging-related teaching, research, service delivery, and advocacy for his community, his region, and his State; and

Whereas, he is a retired Winthrop College professor and served as Chairman of the Winthrop College Sociology Department from 1944 through 1971; and

Whereas, while at Winthrop, Dr. Edwards was active in the formation of the Social Service Workers Club and in 1950 helped prepare the county's first ever Directory of Social Resources, and he is a charter member of the Optimist Club of Rock Hill, which was started in 1949; and

Whereas, he served as State Director of the AARP from 1983 until 1986 and traveled over ten thousand miles annually visiting chapters, conducting workshops, recruiting volunteers, and maintaining liaison with other organizations of senior citizens; and

Whereas, he also served five years as Dean of Friendship Junior College in Rock Hill and currently he tutors at Richmond Drive Elementary School and the Boys and Girls Club of Rock Hill for one hour a week at each place; and

Whereas, for these and countless other contributions and achievements, Dr. Edwards exemplifies the best traits of those who give of themselves as volunteers, and he is a role model in his community and his State for his dedication, imagination, and determination; and

Whereas, Dr. Edwards is a truly outstanding individual, as the title bestowed on him indicates, and we are delighted to have this opportunity to recognize him May 18, 1995. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate Dr. Allen D. Edwards of Rock Hill upon receiving the award as the "1995 Outstanding Older South Carolinian".

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Allen D. Edwards.
