A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE HEARTFELT THANKS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO THE CHILDREN OF ANNE SPRINGS CLOSE FOR SETTING ASIDE TWO THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED ACRES IN YORK COUNTY TO PRESERVE AN AREA THAT WILL SERVE AS A BUFFER AGAINST URBAN ENCROACHMENT, PROTECTING THE FORT MILL COMMUNITY FOR GENERATIONS TO COME.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly recently learned that the eight children of Anne Springs Close of York County have donated two thousand three hundred acres to preserve an area that will serve as a buffer against urban encroachment; and

Whereas, the Town of Fort Mill, which straddles Interstate 77 on the outskirts of Charlotte, will face unprecedented growth of housing developments and businesses; and

Whereas, the Anne Springs Close Greenway, which will open Saturday, May 27, 1995, will offer hiking, horseback riding, fishing, and camping for nominal fees; and

Whereas, this wooded area forms an arc around the northern part of the Town of Fort Mill, including three lakes, four ponds, and about fourteen miles of trails; and

Whereas, this philanthropic effort started in the mid-1980's when Mrs. Close got interested in preserving a grove of hardwoods on land that had been in her family for nearly two hundred years; and

Whereas, visitors will be able to stop at the nature center near the entrance for a trail map with a self-guided nature walk with four swinging bridges, a one hundred ninety year-old log cabin, and a Depression-era dairy barn which are spaced along the trails; and

Whereas, this Greenway will ensure that generations to come will have a place of solitude to which to retreat; and

Whereas, Anne Springs Close, whose great-grandfather founded the Springs textile empire one hundred and eight years ago, prefers fresh breezes to air-conditioning, and spends most of her weekends in the woods; and

Whereas, this Greenway, given by her eight children, will be a fitting tribute to this woman who is credited to have flown as a passenger on the Hindenburg dirigible, climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, and run the New York Marathon. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina extend their heartfelt thanks to the children of Anne Springs Close for setting aside two thousand three hundred acres in York County to preserve an area that will serve as a buffer against urban encroachment, protecting the Fort Mill Community for generations to come.

Be it further resolved that copies of this resolution be forwarded to Anne Springs Close and her eight children: Will Close, Pat Hastings Close, Derrick Close, Buck Close, Frances Close Hart, Dr. Katy Close, Crandall Close Bowles, and Ell Close.
