A BILL

TO AMEND ARTICLE 1, CHAPTER 1, TITLE 59, CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, RELATING TO MISCELLANEOUS EDUCATION PROVISIONS, BY ADDING SECTION 59-1-442 SO AS TO REQUIRE OBSERVANCE OF THE LAST MONDAY OF MAY OF EACH YEAR (MEMORIAL DAY) BY ALL ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY PUBLIC SCHOOLS AS PART OF THEIR HOLIDAY SCHEDULE.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION 1. Chapter 1, Title 59, of the 1976 Code is amended by adding:

"Section 59-1-442. Beginning with the 1995-96 school year, all elementary and secondary public schools must be closed on the last Monday of May of each year (Memorial Day) in recognition of and to honor veterans of the armed services of the United States."

SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
