A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING A. CARROLL BARKER, POLICE CHIEF OF THE CITY OF CLINTON, ON HIS ELECTION AS POTENTATE OF HEJAZ SHRINE TEMPLE.

Whereas, A Carroll Barker serves with great distinction as police chief for the City of Clinton; and

Whereas, he has been elected Potentate of Hejaz Shrine Temple and was chosen to lead the Temple, located outside Mauldin, during the organization's annual business meeting on January 6, 1996; and

Whereas, the Hejaz Shrine Temple, which has 8,835 members, twenty-two Shrine Clubs, and forty-seven walking, motorized, and special units in the fifteen Upstate counties of South Carolina, is part of an international fraternity of about 700,000 members who belong to 191 Shrine Temples in North America; and

Whereas, the Shriners raise funds to support a network of nineteen orthopedic hospitals and three burn institutes where children receive medical care free of charge; and

Whereas, Chief Barker joined the Shriners and Hejaz Shrine Temple in 1968; he is a past president of the Laurens County Shrine Club and represented Laurens County for two years on Hejaz Temple's Executive Committee; and

Whereas, Chief Barker served for fourteen years as race chairman of Laurens County's Shrine Races and, through that endeavor, he helped to raise more than $400,000 for Shriners Hospitals; for thirteen years he has served on the Director's Staff of the Hejaz Temple and has participated on numerous committees; and

Whereas, he resides in Clinton with his lovely wife Kathie and their two children, April and Brad; and

Whereas, the General Assembly is proud to be able to recognize in this special way such an outstanding public servant and humanitarian. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulates A. Carroll Barker, police chief of the City of Clinton, on his election as Potentate of Hejaz Shrine Temple.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Chief Barker at Clinton.
