AN ACT TO PROVIDE THAT CERTAIN STUDENTS FOR THE 1995-96 SCHOOL YEAR ARE EXEMPT FROM THE REQUIREMENTS OF SECTION 59-39-160 OF THE 1976 CODE AND MAY PARTICIPATE IN INTERSCHOLASTIC ACTIVITIES UNDER SPECIFIED CONDITIONS, AND TO AMEND ACT 587 OF 1992, RELATING TO THE ELECTION OF MEMBERS OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF CHEROKEE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT 1, SO AS TO REVISE THE DATES OF THE FILING PERIOD WHEN CANDIDATES MAY FILE WRITTEN DECLARATIONS OF CANDIDACY.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
Filing period revised
SECTION 1. The second paragraph of subsection (A) of Section 1 of Act 587 of 1992 is amended to read:
"Each member of the board must be elected by the qualified electors of the respective district from which the candidate seeks election. All persons desiring to qualify as a candidate shall file written notice of candidacy with the county election commission, or with the clerk of court on forms furnished by the commission which forms must be transmitted to the commission by the clerk of court. This notice of candidacy must be a sworn statement and must include the candidate's name, age, residence address, voting precinct, period of residence in the election district from which election is sought, and other information as the county election commission requires. The filing period opens at noon on the second Friday of August of the year in which the nonpartisan election is to be held and closes at noon on the fourth Friday of August of that year."
Participation in interscholastic activity for school year 1995-96
SECTION 2. Applicable for the 1995-96 school year, a student who has an overall passing average is exempt from the requirements of items (1) and (2) of Section 59-39-160 and may participate in an interscholastic activity if the student needs fewer than four units to receive a high school diploma and the student has passed all of the academic courses which he has taken during the semester preceding the interscholastic activity.

SECTION 3. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
