A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

COMMENDING THE LEE COUNTY SECTION OF THE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF NEGRO WOMEN, INCORPORATED, ON ITS TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF SERVICE TO SOUTH CAROLINA, AND RECOGNIZING THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF DR. DOROTHY IRENE HEIGHT, PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF THE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF NEGRO WOMEN, INCORPORATED.

Whereas, the Lee County Section of the National Council of Negro Women, Incorporated, will celebrate its tenth anniversary on Friday, March 8, 1996; and

Whereas, the National Council of Negro Women, Incorporated, was founded by Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune on December 5, 1935, when she called together a select group of outstanding women leaders from several national organizations in New York City; and

Whereas, the Lee County Section of the National Council of Negro Women was organized in October 1985 under the dynamic leadership of Mrs. Thelma T. Slater, who was elected as the organization's first president and served diligently until her death in January, 1987; and

Whereas, under Mrs. Slater's leadership and with the assistance and cooperation of many local elected officials, clergymen, and the citizenry of Lee County, the organization purchased the birthplace of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, which is now a national historic landmark; and

Whereas, Dr. Alice S. Graves is the current president of the Lee County Section and as president has led the organization in developing projects and programs that are benefiting Lee County and the State of South Carolina; and

Whereas, Dr. Dorothy Irene Height, President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Council of Negro Women, Incorporated, will address the organization on the occasion of its tenth anniversary celebration; and

Whereas, Dr. Height has served this nation for more than sixty-five years as a leader in the struggle for equality and human rights for all people; and

Whereas, her life exemplifies her passionate commitment for a just society; and

Whereas, for her tireless efforts on behalf of humanity, President Ronald Reagan presented Dr. Height the Citizens Medal Award for distinguished service to our nation in 1989; and

Whereas, Dr. Height has served as an advisor to every President since Dwight Eisenhower. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina congratulate the Lee County Section of the National Council of Negro Women, Incorporated, as it celebrates "A Decade of Pride, Progress and Vision" and recognize the accomplishments of their distinguished keynote speaker Dr. Dorothy Irene Height, and wish the local and national organizations many more years of success.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Alice S. Graves, President, Lee County Section of the National Council of Negro Women, Incorporated.
