A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

EXPRESSING THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO E. STEVE DARBY OF ANDERSON COUNTY UPON BEING NAMED THE 1995 SMALL BUSINESS PERSON OF THE YEAR BY THE ANDERSON COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

Whereas, E. Steve Darby of Anderson County has been named the "1995 Small Business Person of the Year" by the Anderson County Chamber of Commerce; and

Whereas, Mr. Darby is President of Darby Electric Co. Inc., and has worked at the company from its beginnings in August 1948 as a small motor shop specializing in rewinding motors for area cotton mills; and

Whereas, he was one of the first two employees of the business operated in the basement of an East Earle Street building by his father, Barney, and another man; and

Whereas, Steve Darby continued to work at Darby Electric part-time and during summers until graduating from The Citadel in 1959; and

Whereas, after serving in the military, Mr. Darby returned to the family business in 1962 and became company president in 1973; and

Whereas, by 1979, the company's sales figures had increased to $2.5 million; however, the closing of several cotton mills threatened the business' future; and

Whereas, Steve Darby redirected the business into the electric motor industry and increased advertising and added new equipment and buildings; and

Whereas, the repositioning paid off in 1994, Darby Electric became the first electric motor service center in the country to receive ISO 9002 registration, an international system of quality standards for industry; and

Whereas, last year, the company's sales volume reached $6 million; and

Whereas, Steve Darby is truly an outstanding role model in his community, for his energy, dedication, imagination, and determination to have reached this most impressive milestone in his brilliant career; and

Whereas, it is appropriate for members of the General Assembly to pause in their deliberations so that they might recognize this distinguished South Carolinian, E. Steve Darby. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express congratulations to E. Steve Darby of Anderson County upon being named the 1995 Small Business Person of the Year by the Anderson County Chamber of Commerce.
