A HOUSE RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING AND COMMENDING MRS. JO-ANNE V. NEWMAN OF AIKEN COUNTY AS THE FIRST WOMAN TO REFEREE AN AMATEUR BOXING MATCH AT THE NATIONAL LEVEL IN JUNE OF 1993.

Whereas, members of the House of Representatives note that Mrs. Jo-Anne V. Newman of Aiken County has achieved a first, not achieved by any other person at this time; and

Whereas, Mrs. Newman became the first woman to referee amateur boxing at the national level at the National Junior Olympic Championships; and

Whereas, the first and only woman referee in South Carolina, Mrs. Newman holds multiple state offices including South Carolina Junior Olympic Chairman, a position she has been elected to since 1991; and

Whereas, she is a member of the South Carolina State Athletic Commission and appointed to the Aiken County Athletic Commission; and

Whereas, Mrs. Newman also is serving a two-year term as Region 3 Chairman, an elective office which encompasses Georgia, Florida, Florida Gold Coast, and the Carolinas; and

Whereas, as Vice President and Administrator of the North Augusta Boxing Club, she has been officiating since 1977 and became nationally certified as judge and official in 1983; and

Whereas, Mrs. Newman unselfishly contributes two nights a week to boxers who are interesting in pulling up their grades at school and are coached by Mrs. Newman after boxing training; and

Whereas, being the first in any particular activity is a legacy that has brought much honor and attention to our State by Mrs. Newman being known as the first lady referee. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate and commend Mrs. Jo-Anne V. Newman of Aiken County as the first woman to referee an amateur boxing match at the national level in June of 1993.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Jo-Anne V. Newman.
