EXPRESSING SORROW AT THE DEATH OF EUGENE MONTGOMERY OF ORANGEBURG, AND EXTENDING SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, Eugene Alonzo Randolph Montgomery of Orangeburg died April 28, 1996, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston; and
Whereas, Mr. Montgomery was educated at Claflin College, receiving a bachelor's degree in sociology in 1942; he served in the United States Marine Corps; and he was a graduate of Atlanta University's School of Social Work with a master's degree in social work, specializing in administration and community organization; and
Whereas, he was the first executive secretary of the South Carolina Conference of Branches of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, in which he was a life member and the treasurer of the Orangeburg branch for many years; and
Whereas, he was a licensed real estate and insurance broker and a partner in the first black-owned real estate and insurance company in Orangeburg; and
Whereas, he was the owner of Montgomery and Company Insurance and Real Estate, Inc., and was retired in 1979 from the United States Postal Service; and
Whereas, he was a member of the South Carolina Chapter of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers, of which he served for many years as a member of the executive board; he was also a member of the Quarter Century Club of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers and served as parliamentarian of the South Carolina chapter; and
Whereas, he was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Orangeburg, where he was director of the stewards' board and a member of the finance committee, administrative board, and Methodist Men; he was a former chairman of the Wesley Foundation Board of Directors; he was affiliated with Edisto Lodge No. 39, Robert Shaw Wilkinson Consistory No. 220, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8166, and Jeddah Temple No. 160; and
Whereas, he served as chairman of the City of Orangeburg's planning commission and was a former member of the Zoning and Appeals Board and the Human Relations Council; and
Whereas, he was a member of the Orangeburg Chamber of Commerce, South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts Board of Directors, Orangeburg School District Five Foundation Committee, Junior Achievement Board of Directors, and National Association of Real Estate Brokers; and
Whereas, Eugene Montgomery was among South Carolina's leading and most distinguished citizens; he was an outstanding individual who was dedicated to his community, church, profession, and family and who commanded the respect and admiration of all who knew him; and
Whereas, we want the members of his family and his many friends to know that they are uppermost in our thoughts and have our deepest sympathy. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, expresses sorrow at the death of Eugene Montgomery of Orangeburg and extends sympathy to his family and many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Montgomery's family.
