A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS OF ONE OF SOUTH CAROLINA'S MOST DISTINGUISHED BUSINESS AND CIVIC LEADERS, MR. WALTER S. MONTGOMERY, SR., OF SPARTANBURG, UPON HIS DEATH.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly were deeply saddened to learn of the death on Friday, April 26, 1996, of one of South Carolina's most distinguished business and civic leaders, Mr. Walter S. Montgomery, Sr., of Spartanburg; and

Whereas, Mr. Montgomery, from 1934 to 1973, was president and chairman of Spartan Mills which is one of South Carolina's most innovative and successful textile manufacturers and which was founded by his grandfather in 1888; and

Whereas, as a young executive, he kept Spartan Mills open during the depression and stewarded the company through nearly four decades of growth before being succeeded in 1973 by his son, Walter S. Montgomery, Jr.; and

Whereas, Walter Montgomery, Sr., was a native of Spartanburg and a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute where the excellent training he received served him well during his adult career when he took on the responsibility for so many business and civic endeavors; and

Whereas, in addition to the leadership of Spartan Mills, he helped organize the Spartanburg County Foundation and served as a trustee of both the Spartanburg County Music Foundation and the Spartanburg Historical Society. Mr. Montgomery also served on the Board of Trustees for Converse College for more than fifty-five years and helped establish the University of South Carolina at Spartanburg. He also served as honorary chairman for the Spartanburg Regional Medical Center Foundation's capital campaign where the new patient tower was named in his honor; and

Whereas, his lovely wife, Rose, to whom he was devoted, died in 1993, and he is survived by a son Walter S. Montgomery, Jr., of Campobello and a daughter Rose M. Johnston of Memphis, Tennessee, two sisters, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren; and

Whereas, with the death of this truly outstanding South Carolinian, the people of Spartanburg and South Carolina have lost a respected businessman, a dedicated civic and community leader, and a good friend. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, hereby express their deepest sympathy to the family and many friends of one of South Carolina's most distinguished business and civic leaders, Mr. Walter S. Montgomery, Sr., of Spartanburg, upon his death.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to his son, Walter S. Montgomery, Jr., and to his daughter, Rose M. Johnston.
