A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

EXPRESSING SORROW AT THE DEATH OF RETIRED COLONEL ALFRED JUDSON PLOWDEN, JR., OF SUMMERTON AND EXTENDING SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, Retired Colonel Alfred Judson Plowden, Jr., of Summerton died April 26, 1996, at the age of eighty-two; and

Whereas, Colonel Plowden was the brother of the late Representative Charles N. Plowden; and

Whereas, Colonel Plowden was born in Summerton; he retired from the United States Army and was also a retired United States Marshal; he was past state commander of the American Legion and of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and also past commander of American Legion Post No. 35 in Summerton; he was a former athletics director, coach, and teacher at Carlisle Military Academy and was a member and past elder of Summerton Presbyterian Church; and

Whereas, Colonel Plowden was a beloved and outstanding member of the community and his presence will be greatly missed. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, expresses sorrow at the death of Retired Colonel Alfred Judson Plowden, Jr., of Summerton and extends sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that copies of this resolution be forwarded to the members of Colonel Plowden's family, namely, his widow, Manton McCutcheon Plowden; his two daughters, Carolyn P. Turner of Mount Pleasant and Betty Jane P. Knippel of Atlanta; his brother, John Gabriel Plowden of Columbia; his sisters, Mary Virginia McCracken of Summerville, Susan Elizabeth Belser of Summerton, and Leo Melle Pennell of Greenville.
