A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND AND OFFER THE SINCERE APPRECIATION OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO MIRIAM COLLETON GREEN OF AWENDAW, SOUTH CAROLINA, FOR HER OUTSTANDING CAREER, LIFETIME ACCOMPLISHMENTS, AND GENEROSITY IN SERVING THE PEOPLE OF CHARLESTON COUNTY.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina are delighted to recognize Miriam Colleton Green for her outstanding leadership qualities and her willingness to help others; and

Whereas, Miriam Green is the daughter of Elizabeth S. Colleton and the late Thomas Colleton; and

Whereas, she resides in Awendaw with her husband, Robert L. Green, Sr., and is a woman totally dedicated to her son, Robert, Jr. and her daughter, April; and

Whereas, in the 60's she was one of the few students that challenged segregation and along with her other classmates entered McClellanville High at a time when integration was being experimented in the South; and

Whereas, after graduating third in her class at McClellanville High, she furthered her education at Palmer Junior College, graduating in 1971; and

Whereas, in 1972 Miriam Green began her career at Berkeley Electric Cooperative; she is now in her twenty-fourth year with the company and her current position is Vice President of Community Service; she is the first and only African-American to serve in upper management in the fifty-four year-old company; and in this capacity, her work takes her throughout the Tri-County area; and

Whereas, Miriam Green, also known as the "Light Lady", is one of the most familiar faces known to rural residents of Charleston County; and

Whereas, her mission in life is to help the poor and disadvantaged. This is a mission Miriam Green does not take lightly; and

Whereas, Mrs. Green has been instrumental in the revitalization of numerous families after Hurricane Hugo, worked hand and hand with The United Methodist Church Relief Center in evaluating the needs of Low Country citizens, and through her efforts she helped identify more than forty families in need and assisted in getting them funds to buy materials to rebuild and repair their homes; and

Whereas, in 1990 she worked with the Charleston County Grants Administration in applying and receiving a $200,000 grant for housing rehabilitation. This significant assistance enabled fifteen families to pick up their lives and start over. After the grant money was spent, but more work was still left undone, Miriam Green persuaded Berkeley Electric's Board of Trustees and Management to implement Operation Round-Up. Operation Round-Up rounds the co-op member's bill to the nearest dollar. The excess change is used to assist Berkeley Electric members install septic systems, wells, repair plumbing, do electrical work, and other necessities. The project has benefited hundreds of Tri-County citizens and has raised more than $900,000; and

Whereas, Mrs. Green is Mayor Pro tempore and council person for the Town of Awendaw. Her accomplishments include: the Channel 2 "Good Apple" award, the Women Involved in Rural Electrification (WIRE) "Women of the Year" award, the Charleston Link Chapters "Outstanding Heroine" award, and received Governor Campbell's "Leadership for Community Services Honors"; and

Whereas, she also serves on the Trident United Way Allocation Board, N.E.W. Foundation, Johns Island Rural Mission Board, and YWCA Board; and

Whereas, Miriam Green is an active member of Mt. Nebo AME Church where she serves on the Steward Board; and

Whereas, this individual is known and loved for her patience, compassion, and kindness to others and never hesitates to help anyone in need; and

Whereas, Mrs. Green tirelessly contributes her time, talents, and energy to numerous causes for the betterment of her community and the lives of her fellow citizens; and

Whereas, for these and numerous other contributions and achievements, Miriam Green epitomizes the best traits of those who give of themselves. She is the "heart" of so many community, county, and state efforts. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend and offer sincere appreciation to Miriam Colleton Green of Awendaw, South Carolina, for her outstanding career, lifetime accomplishments, and generosity in serving the people of Charleston County.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Miriam Colleton Green.
