A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING CUMBERLAND A.M.E. CHURCH OF AIKEN ON THE JOYOUS OCCASION OF ITS ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-NINTH ANNIVERSARY.

Whereas, Cumberland African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church of Aiken is marking its one hundred twenty-ninth anniversary in 1996; and

Whereas, the A.M.E. Church was founded by Richard Allen in the year 1816; his vision, dedication, and leadership enabled the church to grow and to flourish and also to serve as a true foundation for Christian living and worship; and

Whereas, the Reverend Moses Miller is the church's current pastor; Reverend Miller and the church's present congregation are fully committed to a caring, concerned ministry and to genuine social justice; they have vision and leadership and are dedicated to the improvement of community relations; and

Whereas, the church is under the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of Bishop John Hurst Adams, the A.M.E. bishop for that area; Bishop Adams is widely recognized as a leader among Christian clerics in the Palmetto State, and he has worked unceasingly for outstanding relations among all denominations and races; and

Whereas, we are extremely pleased and happy to have this opportunity to recognize this outstanding church on such a grand occasion. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulates Cumberland A.M.E. Church of Aiken on the joyous occasion of its one hundred twenty-ninth anniversary.

Be it further resolved that copies of this resolution be forwarded to Bishop John Hurst Adams and to the Reverend Moses Miller and the congregation of Cumberland A.M.E. Church.
