A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING DR. ALLEN D. EDWARDS OF ROCK HILL ON HIS SELECTION AS THE "1995 OUTSTANDING OLDER SOUTH CAROLINIAN".

Whereas, Dr. Allen D. Edwards of Rock Hill has been selected to receive the 1995 Outstanding Older South Carolinian Award by the Office of the Governor, Division on Aging; and

Whereas, the award is to be presented to Dr. Edwards at a reception in his honor in the Vista Room of the State Museum on May 18, 1995; and

Whereas, each year, since 1971, the Governor's Office, Division on Aging, honors a South Carolinian, age sixty-five or older who, through his or her leadership, has rendered outstanding and ongoing contributions to aging-related teaching, research, service delivery, and/or advocacy on the community, regional, or state level; and

Whereas, the recipient of this prestigious award for 1995, Dr. Allen Edwards, is eighty-nine years young and is a retired Winthrop College professor and former state director of the AARP; he served as chairman of the Winthrop sociology department from 1944-1971 and was state director of the AARP from 1983-1986; and

Whereas, Dr. Edwards, while at Winthrop, was active in the formation of the Social Service Workers Club, and in 1950 he helped prepare York County's first-ever Directory of Social Resources; and

Whereas, as state director of the AARP, he traveled 10,000 miles annually in visiting chapters, conducting workshops, recruiting volunteers, and maintaining liaison with other organizations of senior citizens; and

Whereas, he was a member of the AARP State Legislative Committee and worked for the passage of the generic drug bill, the Probate Code, the Death with Dignity Act, and the Homestead Exemption; and

Whereas, Dr. Edwards is truly an outstanding individual who is completely devoted to the cause and interests of older citizens, and this resolution cannot begin to do justice to him in praising his many substantive contributions and accomplishments in this area; and

Whereas, he is highly deserving of the award that has been bestowed upon him, and the members of the General Assembly are very pleased to have this opportunity to recognize him in a special way. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulates Dr. Allen D. Edwards of Rock Hill on his selection as the "1995 Outstanding Older South Carolinian".

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Edwards and also to Constance C. Rinehart, M.S.W., Director, Office of the Governor, Division on Aging.
