A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

EXPRESSING THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO COMMANDER R. DOUGLAS HUGHES, USN, A SPARTANBURG NATIVE, ON ASSUMING COMMAND OF USS BOONE (FFG-28).

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly note with pride that Commander R. Douglas Hughes, USN, a native of Spartanburg and a 1976 graduate of The Citadel, assumed command on April 21, 1995, of USS Boone (FFG-28) at change of command ceremonies held in Mayport, Florida; and

Whereas, in a distinguished navy career, Commander Hughes has occupied important posts on shore, including most recently on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations, Surface Warfare Division as Head, Surface Warfare Manpower, and prior to that as Weapons Officer aboard USS Wisconsin; and

Whereas, Commander Hughes has furthered his education by earning advanced degrees from the Naval War College and Salve Regina University, thus preparing himself for advancement in the naval service; and

Whereas, his preparation, experience, skill, and perseverance will stand him in good stead in commanding USS Boone and allow him and those over whom he has been placed to serve as "a safeguard unto the United States of America, and a security for such as pass on the seas upon their lawful occasion". Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly express congratulations to Commander R. Douglas Hughes, USN, on assuming command of USS Boone (FFG-28).

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Commander Hughes.
