EXPRESSING THE APPRECIATION OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO ROSE MARY S. SMITH FOR HER DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY ON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT AND WISHING FOR HER HAPPINESS AND SUCCESS IN ALL THE YEARS TO COME.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly note that Rose Mary S. Smith of Columbia in Richland County has announced plans to retire at the end of June, 1995; and
Whereas, since 1972, when Rose Mary went to work for the House of Representatives, she has served the members of the General Assembly with great skill and dedication; as a "pool" stenographer for all House members, as administrative assistant to Representative Ed Bennett, the chairman of the House Agricultural and Natural Resources Committee, as administrative assistant to Senator Hyman Rubin, chairman of the Senate Medical Affairs Committee, and thereafter for Senators McConnell and Thomas; and
Whereas, Rose Mary had a two-year hiatus from the General Assembly, when she worked for Congressman Arthur Ravenel, of the First District of South Carolina, serving in his Charleston office and employing her skills serving the congressman and the people of that district; and
Whereas, since December, 1988, when she returned to the Senate she has worked for Senator Glenn McConnell, bringing to his service and the people he represents her boundless energy, unflagging good humor, astonishing multilingualism, and outstanding capacity for work; and
Whereas, in her twenty-three years of public service, she has made a host of loyal friends and coworkers by her courtesy and thoughtfulness; and
Whereas, Rose Mary has understood the words "duty" and "loyalty" in their larger context and in their nobler adjuration--to listen quietly, to counsel wisely, and to keep confidences; and
Whereas, it is with some sadness that we witness our friend bring to a close an extraordinary career in public service, a career that has spanned many years, that has witnessed much change, that has endured despair, and that has generated abundant hope; and
Whereas, legislators and staff alike will miss her and her standards of excellence, thoroughness, and efficiency. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly express their heartfelt appreciation to Rose Mary S. Smith for her dedicated service to the General Assembly on the occasion of her retirement and wish for her happiness and success in the years to come.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Rose Mary Smith.
