O Lord our God, in Whose presence we find peace and calm for ourselves, we draw near to You in a sure and confident hope. Lift us up, take our hearts and minds, lead us, strengthen us and endow us with gentleness, goodness and compassion. With Your benediction resting upon us, may we face the tasks before us with honest dealing, clear thinking and wise judgement.

May the Lord make His face to shine upon us; may the Lord lift up His countenance upon us and give us peace. Amen.

Deliberations were opened with prayer by the Chaplain of the House of Representatives, the Rev. Dr. Alton C. Clark as follows:

We thank You, Heavenly Father, for Your providential care that has watched over each of us while absent from this place. And as we begin another week of service here, keep us a people mindful of Your favor and glad to do Your will. May no task be so trivial, no work so insignificant, as not to be done with our best. And as we leave this altar of prayer, may the time of work and the time of prayer be woven into one fabric. So guard our thoughts, control our speech, direct our actions.

Hear both our spoken and unuttered prayers of our hearts and answer them according to Your perfect wisdom. Amen.
