A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND AND CONGRATULATE MR. LES MCCRAW, A NATIVE SOUTH CAROLINIAN, FOR HIS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE TO HIS STATE AND HIS NATION AS A DEDICATED ENGINEER, BUSINESSMAN, AND PUBLIC SERVANT, UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE FLUOR CORPORATION.

Whereas, the members of the Senate have learned with deep regret that Leslie "Les" G. McCraw II, retired from Fluor Corporation as Chairman on March 10, 1997, and Chief Executive Officer January 1, 1998; and

Whereas, Mr. McCraw was born November 3, 1934, in Anderson, South Carolina; and

Whereas, Mr. McCraw earned a degree in civil engineering, graduated from Clemson University in 1956, and is a licensed, professional engineer; and

Whereas, Mr. McCraw and his loving and devoted wife, Mary Earle, have raised three outstanding sons, Leslie III, James, and John; and

Whereas, Mr. McCraw began his long and distinguished career as an engineer with Gulf Oil in Philadelphia after which he served as an officer in the United States Air Force and then joined DuPont in Delaware where, during a successful fifteen-year career, he advanced quickly through the ranks of the company's engineering and construction divisions; and

Whereas, Mr. McCraw joined Daniel International in Greenville, South Carolina in 1975 in what was the beginning of many happy and prosperous years of positive change and growth for Les McCraw and the Daniel International family; and

Whereas, Daniel International was purchased by Fluor Corporation, a global engineering, construction, and diversified services company, in 1977 and, subsequently, Mr. McCraw was named President of Daniel in 1982 and became Chief Executive Officer and a Director on Fluor Corporation's Board of Directors in 1984; and

Whereas, Mr. McCraw's professional and keen business skills were further utilized when in 1986 he was named President and Chief Executive Officer of the new company called Fluor Daniel which combined the engineering, construction, and maintenance capabilities of two existing companies and headquartered in Irvine, California; and

Whereas, Mr. McCraw was named President of Fluor Corporation in 1988, Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer in 1990, and Chairman of the Board in 1991; and

Whereas, Mr. McCraw has been and continues to be a selfless and devoted public servant whose leadership and professionalism sets an example for others to follow; and

Whereas, Mr. McCraw is a life member of the Board of Trustees for his alma mater, Clemson University, serves on the Clemson University President's Advisory Council, and sits on the Graduate School of Management Board of Visitors at the University of California, Irvine; and

Whereas, Mr. McCraw has made extraordinary and invaluable contributions in the business arena with membership in the California Business Round Table and the Palmetto Business Forum in South Carolina and sits on the boards of Allergan Inc., New York Life Insurance Company, the National Committee on United States-China Relations and the US-China Business Council, and the International Advisory Board of the British-American Business Council; and

Whereas, Mr. McCraw has been active and prominent on a national level with membership in The Business Round Table and the Construction Industry's Presidents Forum, and by serving as the 1995 Honorary Chairman of National Engineers Week; and

Whereas, Mr. McCraw prestigiously serves our Country globally as a director of the National Committee on United States-China Relations and the US-China Business Council, as a member of the International Advisory Board of the British-American Business Council, and was appointed by the President of the United States to co-chair the President's Export Council in 1994 and 1995; and

Whereas, Mr. McCraw has devoted time to his community as a member of the Los Angeles World Affairs Council, the national Business Community of the Arts, Inc., Junior Achievement Orange County Board of Governors, and is a director of the Peace Center Foundation in Greenville, South Carolina; and

Whereas, Mr. McCraw has many other affiliations and associations too numerous to mention in this resolution. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate commend and congratulate Mr. Les McCraw for his distinguished service to his State and his Nation as a dedicated engineer, businessman, and public servant, upon the occasion of his retirement, and wish him much success and happiness in all of his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr Leslie G. McCraw.
