A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF GREENVILLE ON THE OCCASION OF THE CHURCH'S ONE HUNDRED FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY.

Whereas, First Presbyterian Church of Greenville is the largest Presbyterian church in South Carolina and one of the largest churches in Greenville; and

Whereas, begun in 1848, Greenville's First Presbyterian Church has had only nine senior ministers in its one hundred fifty years of existence, an average tenure of almost seventeen years for each senior minister; the church ranks as tenth largest nationally among the member-churches of the Presbyterian Church USA; it is one of the four hundred largest churches of all denominations in the nation and one of the four hundred largest in weekly worship attendance; and

Whereas, First Presbyterian Church of Greenville has a distinguished history; it has provided genuine leadership at the community, state, and national levels and numbers among its past faithful late Governor Martin Ansel; and

Whereas, First Presbyterian has established and nurtured a firm faith in downtown Greenville, a faith which is continuing to grow; the church has embarked on the "Building Again in the Heart of Greenville" campaign and seeks to provide Christian witness in the center of this energetic, successful city; and

Whereas, the good people of First Presbyterian will celebrate their church's exciting first one hundred fifty years with a Sesquicentennial Dinner Celebration on Saturday, April 25, 1998, at 7:00 P.M. at Woodside Conference Center at Greenville's Palmetto Exposition Center, an occasion for thankfulness, joy, reflection, and hope; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are pleased to have the opportunity to recognize this outstanding congregation at such a blessed and special moment in its history. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulates First Presbyterian Church of Greenville on the occasion of the church's one hundred fiftieth anniversary.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to First Presbyterian Church of Greenville.
