RECOGNIZING JIM FARMER OF WALHALLA FOR HIS DEDICATION, COMMITMENT, AND TIRELESS EFFORTS TO BOY SCOUTING THE WORLD OVER AS HE STEPS DOWN AS SCOUTMASTER OF BOY SCOUT TROOP 45.
Whereas, Jim Farmer of Walhalla is stepping down after serving for sixteen years as Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 45; and
Whereas, Jim began his scouting career over forty-seven years ago in Walhalla as a member of Cub Scout Pack 45, advancing to Troop 45 from which he is now retiring; and
Whereas, he earned the highest rank, Eagle Scout, while a member of Troop 45, and during his tenure as Scoutmaster, he has assisted twenty-six young men in achieving the rank of Eagle Scout; and
Whereas, Jim began his scoutmastering career after reaching Eagle Scout by serving as Assistant Scoutmaster to Troop 45 and also to Troop 130 in West Union; and
Whereas, in 1961 Mr. Farmer joined the Navy, and for the next twenty years, he worked with scouting units across the country, including California, Connecticut, Florida, Rhode Island, and Virginia and around the world in Scotland, Italy, and Malta; and
Whereas, while in Scotland, Jim was made an Honorary Queen Scout, which is the equivalent of our Eagle Scout, and he also received a Lifetime Warrant as Assistant Scoutmaster for the Scottish troop and earned the British version of the Wood Badge Leader Training Award; and
Whereas, after returning to Walhalla upon retiring from the Navy, Mr. Farmer began serving as Scoutmaster of Troop 45; and
Whereas, Jim's dedication and commitment to enriching the lives and developing the character and leadership of countless boys and young men have earned him much praise and recognition not only in his own community and State but nationally as well; and
Whereas, he received the District Award of Merit, the highest award given to a Scout by his district and the Silver Beaver, the highest award given to a Scout by the Boy Scouts of America; he also was presented the Scoutmaster Award of Merit by the National Eagle Scout Association; and the Boy Scouts of America, the Association of Baptists for Scouting, and the Rocky Knoll Baptist Church honored him with the Good Shepherd Award; and
Whereas, the South Carolina Senate is pleased to take this opportunity to recognize Mr. Jim Farmer for his selfless service to the young men of this State and for his outstanding contributions to the life and world of scouting. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the South Carolina Senate recognizes Jim Farmer of Walhalla for his dedication, commitment, and tireless efforts to boy scouting the world over as he steps down as Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 45.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Jim Farmer.
