CONGRATULATING THE MEN'S TENNIS TEAM OF LANDER UNIVERSITY ON WINNING THE 1996 NCAA DIVISION II NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.
Whereas, Head Coach Joseph Cabri has brought yet another national tennis championship home to Lander University and to South Carolina, with the Lander men's tennis team, under Coach Cabri's guidance, capturing the 1996 NCAA Division II Championship; and
Whereas, Ricardo Almeida, Martin Kahm, Jerome Moreau, Anders Nilsson, Claes Persson, Maurice Szpydowski, Laio Teixeira, and Janne Vilhunen made outstanding contributions as members of the Lander University Senators Tennis Team throughout the tennis season; and
Whereas, the 1996 national title marks Coach Joseph Cabri's sixth consecutive national championship at Lander and eighth in twelve years; and
Whereas, two Lander players were named All-Americans for their tennis prowess, and the team earned its fifth consecutive NCAA Division II Peach Belt Athletic Conference crown; and
Whereas, the team also excelled in the classroom by accumulating a team grade point ratio of 3.3 out of a possible 4.0; and
Whereas, four scholar-athletes ended the year with GPRs higher than 3.75 and earned membership in Alpha Chi National Honor Fraternity and Sigma Beta Delta Business Honor Society; and
Whereas, four players received NCAA Academic All-American status; and
Whereas, the 1996 crown was the result of hard work, dedication, unity, and superb talent on the part of the Lander players, as well as the excellent coaching and motivation of Coach Cabri; and
Whereas, this championship is a great honor for the team, its coach, Lander University, and the entire State of South Carolina and is highly deserving of recognition. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulates the Men's Tennis Team of Lander University on winning the 1996 NCAA Division II National Championship, as well as the National Doubles Title.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Men's Tennis Team of Lander University in care of Head Coach Joseph Cabri.
