TO COMMEND MRS. PEGGY S. MCQUOWN OF GREENWOOD COUNTY UPON BEING NAMED THE SOUTH CAROLINA MOTHER OF THE YEAR FOR 1997.
Whereas, the members of the Senate are very pleased to learn that the South Carolina Mother's Committee has named Mrs. Peggy S. McQuown of Greenwood County, South Carolina Mother of the Year; and
Whereas, Mrs. McQuown, the mother of eight and grandmother of 18, was selected for this prestigious honor by the committee from 41 nominees statewide; and
Whereas, she was nominated for the award by the Holly Garden Club, where as a member she has held every office of the club, served as chairperson of many committees and enthusiastically participated in the club's interests of gardening, flower arranging, conservation and beautification of Greenwood; and
Whereas, Mrs. McQuown and her husband, Dr. James Allan McQuown, worked selflessly to promote an open home setting where all of their children could reach the highest potential possible during their young productive years; and
Whereas, her son, John Mark McQuown, is an accomplished pianist and vocalist who sings various songs of love, hope and compassion including "God Bless the U.S.A." and "Friends" for local clubs and organizations, and on several occasions was invited to Columbia to sing for the Senate and House of Representatives; and
Whereas, her role as a successful and dedicated mother, grandmother, and homemaker is further recognized by the character and achievements of her children in the religious, educational, civic, governmental and business communities; and
Whereas, Mrs. McQuown is a member, teacher and leader at First Presbyterian Church in Greenwood and was the first woman ordained to the Presbyterian Diaconate in 1971; and
Whereas, while devoting full-time duties as a wife, mother and homemaker, Mrs. McQuown served as a school board trustee for Greenwood School District 50 for twelve years, receiving an honorary award for service, and was president of the Old Ninety-Six Girl Scout Council and served in every official capacity of the Greenwood County Medical Alliance; and
Whereas, now that her children are grown she continues to work in the community as moderator of the Presbyterian Women of Trinity Presbytery, which includes seventy churches, and serves on the Multi-County Board for Disabilities and Special Needs and the Board of Directors of Greenwood County Department of Social Services; and
Whereas, the members of the Senate, by this resolution, would like to publicly recognize and commend Mrs. McQuown upon her receipt of this award, as she serves as a positive role model for others around her state and community. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend Mrs. Peggy S. McQuown of Greenwood County for being named South Carolina Mother of the Year for 1997.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. McQuown.
