TO COMMEND DR. JOHN T. BERRY OF GREENVILLE, ONE OF SOUTH CAROLINA'S MOST DISTINGUISHED PASTORS, UPON HIS ELECTION AS MODERATOR OF THE ENOREE RIVER BAPTIST ASSOCIATION AND FOR HIS SERVICE AS THE HOST OF THE STATE USHERS AUXILIARY OF THE BAPTIST EDUCATION MISSIONARY CONVENTION TO BE HELD IN GREENVILLE IN MAY, 1997.
Whereas, Dr. John T. Berry of Greenville is the founder and pastor of the New Jerusalem Baptist Church which he has served with distinction for over twenty-eight years and is considered one of South Carolina's most respected ministers; and
Whereas, Dr. Berry, a native of Greenville, South Carolina, received A.B. and B.D. degrees from Morris College, studied at the University of South Carolina and Hampton University, and received D. Min from Covington Theological Seminary; and
Whereas, he has served the upstate of South Carolina as pastor of five other churches before founding New Jerusalem Baptist Church. He also has served his community in many other capacities including being president of Parent Teachers Associations of Gaffney and Greenville, secretary-treasurer of the Legal Services Board of Western Carolina, and the first African-American to serve on the Civil Service Commission of Gaffney; and
Whereas, Dr. Berry has received many awards and recognitions during his career, including the Order of the Palmetto and the Urban League Twenty-five Year Service Award; and
Whereas, this truly outstanding South Carolinian now serves as moderator of the Enoree River Baptist Association and in May will act as host of the State Ushers Auxiliary of the Baptist Education Missionary Convention; and
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to publicly recognize and congratulate Dr. John T. Berry upon his selection as moderator of Enoree River Baptist Association and for his many other contributions as a religious and community leader of Greenville and South Carolina. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly hereby commend Dr. John T. Berry of Greenville, one of South Carolina's most distinguished pastors, upon his election as moderator of the Enoree River Baptist Association and for his service as host of the State Ushers Auxiliary of the Baptist Education Missionary Convention to be held in Greenville in May, 1997.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. John T. Berry.
